The American actor was well known for his roles on television and radio between the 1930s and1960s. He played the role of U.S. special agent Steve Mitchell in the radio and TV series “Dangerous Assignment”. His famous films include “Mother’s Boy”, “Another Face”, “Midnight Taxi”, and “A Cry in the Night”.
Family
His parents were Rebecca and Thomas Donlevy. He wed Yvonne Grey in 1928 and they were divorced after eight years. He later married actress Marjorie Lane in 1936, and then Lillian Arch Lugosi, who was his wife until his death in 1972. He had one child.
“What Price Glory” and Other Career Highlights
Donlevy started his acting career in the early part of the 1920s when he appeared in theatre productions and later played roles in silent films such as “Damaged Hearts” (1924), “The Eve of the Revolution” (1924), and “Monsieur Beaucaire” (1924).
In 1925, he performed in the Broadway play “What Price Glory”, written by Maxwell Anderson and Laurence Stallings. The play, which starred Donlevy and Louis Wolheim, was a great success and ran for two years. His role in the play shot him to prominence.
He also played the role of Richard Courtney in “A Man of Quality”, a 1926 film directed by Wesley Ruggles. He starred with George Wash, Ruth Dwyer, Lucien Prival and Laura De Cardi.
Donlevy broke through in his career when he was featured in the 1935 film “Barbara Coast”, which was directed by Howard Hawks with Samuel Goldwyn as the producer. He performed in the drama film “Mary Burns, Fugitive” that same year.
Nominations
He received a nomination for the Academy Award for “Best Supporting Actor” for his performance as Sergeant Markoff in the 1939 adventure film ”Beau Geste”.
Death
On April 6, 1972, he died at the age of 71 from throat cancer. He was at the Motion Picture Country Hospital in Woodland Hills, California.
