About Buford Pusser
Buford Pusser full name, Buford Hayse Pusser, was a well-known American law enforcement officer and sheriff of the 20th century. He was famous for his courageous efforts to help curb gambling, moonshining, prostitution, drug trafficking, and other social vices in the Mississippi-Tennessee neighborhoods.
Early Life
He was born in McNairy County, Tennessee. After Pusser graduated from high school, he joined the US Marine Corps. In 1957, at age 20, he relocated to Chicago, where he had a short career as a local wrestler, with the ring name “Buford the Bull.”
Career Highlights
In 1962, he was appointed as Adamsville’s constable and held the office until 1964. He became the sheriff of McNairy County, Tennessee, in 1964 and was the youngest person to hold the position.
During his tenure as sheriff, Mississippi-Tennessee was arguably the most dangerous neighborhood in America. He promptly began a war against all vices in the areas and made several efforts to eliminate the infamous “State Line Mob” and “Dixie Mafia.” He survived numerous assassination attempts, one of which unfortunately took the life of Pauline Pusser, his wife, in August 1967.
Death
On August 21, 1974, his car crashed into a barrier on his way from the McNairy County Fair, the car caught fire and he died in it. He was 36 years old.
