About Carl Woese
Carl Woese was a famous American microbiologist who, in 1977, classified the Archaea kingdom as a separate domain from bacteria. A decade before his discovery, he created the hypothetical stage known as the Ribonucleic acid World.
Aside from his numerous scientific researches, Woese was also an educationist and worked with institutions like the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. In order to make his findings known to the public, the highly-rated American scientist published a book in 1967 which was titled “The Genetic Code: the Molecular Basis for Genetic Expression”.
Personal Life
He was married to a lady called Gabriella with whom he had two kids.
Education
Woese completed Massachusetts’ Deerfield Academy before enrolling at Amherst College. In 1953, this famous biologist graduated from Yale University where he had his Ph.D. program. He also attended the University of Rochester.
Decorations
In 1992, he won the Leeuwenhoek Medal. Three years later, the National Academy of Sciences decorated him with the Selman A. Waksman Award in Microbiology. He also received the National Medal of Science, and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences’ Crafoord Prize.
Death
He battled with pancreatic cancer which caused his death in 2012.

In 1960, he started working at the famous General Electric Research Laboratory.
Renowned American scientist David Stahl was one of his notable students.
