Charles Conder was an English painter who was one of the founders of the Heidelberg School in Australia.
Early Life
The Australian painter was the second of six children born to James Conder and Mary Ann Ayres. After spending his early years in India, he returned to England to attend school. In 1884, he moved to Australia, where he got a job as a land surveyor. However, he was more interested in art and left his job to become an artist.
Career
Four years after moving to Australia, Conder moved to Melbourne and became acquainted with other influential artists. He painted “A holiday at Mentone” and “The Wreck” during that time. In 1890, Conder left Australia and spent most of his time in Europe.
Later Life and Death
Condor spent his remaining years in a sanatorium for the treatment of tertiary syphilis, which he had contracted while in Australia. He died in 1909 at age 40.
