About Charles Halleck
He was a two-time majority leader in the House of Representatives from 1947 -1948 and again in 1953 – 1954. The American politician’s time in the House lasted for more than three decades. During that time, he earned a reputation for being a skilled and successful lawmaker. He also served as minority leader from 1959 until 1965, when Gerald R. Ford of Michigan deposed him in a political revolt.
Background
Born in Demotte, Indiana, he served as an infantryman in the United States Army during World War I. After returning from combat, he got an LLB from Indiana University (1924). He served as the 13th District Court's prosecutor from 1924 to 1934.
Career
Following the passing of Representative-elect Frederick Landis, he was chosen to serve in the US House of Representatives. He was a key member of the conservative coalition and served as House Majority Leader after the 1946 and 1952 elections. He oversaw House Republicans in his capacity as Minority Leader. He supported important legislation, including the 24th Amendment to the US Constitution.
Honor
The Lafayette Federal District Courthouse was renamed after him.

He wed Blanche Annetta White, with whom he had two children.
