About Charles II of England
Return of the King
Charles II of England was a former monarch of the kingdoms of England, Scotland, and Ireland. After succeeding his father, Charles I, in 1649, he was forced into exile by the establishment of the English Commonwealth led by Oliver Cromwell. For nine years, he went into hiding in France, the Dutch Republic, and the Spanish Netherlands. After Cromwell’s death in 1658, Charles II was summoned back to reclaim the throne and restore the monarchy.
Reign of Charles II
His reign was largely defined by the so-called Clarendon Code, which aimed to uphold the Church of England and Catholicism as a whole. Charles II’s reign was also marked with two devastating events: the Great Plague of London and the Great Fire of London, with the latter causing the king himself to join the fire-fighting efforts.
