About Charles Laughton
Charles Laughton had an incredible thespian talent. After making his professional stage appearance in 1926, the English star went on to feature in many more productions. In his film career, he is probably most-well known for starring in 1933’s film “The Private Life of Henry VIII”, after which he received “Best Actor in a Leading Role” award at the Academy Awards of that year.
His other big film hits include 1939’s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” in which he landed an important role of Quasimodo. He also performed in “The Barretts of Wimpole Street”, a 1957 film in which he played Edward Moulton-Barrett.
He appeared in an episode of the TV series “Checkmate” in 1961.
In addition to his acting roles, Laughton was also involved in other aspects of the film sector. He worked as a producer and director. Some of his notable works as a director includes “The Night of the Hunter”, which he worked on in 1955.
Awards
Apart from the above-mentioned award, he also received multiple Academy Award nominations such as 1935’s “Best Actor in a Leading Role” category he was nominated in for his work in “Mutiny on the Bounty”. The said role also earned him an award at the “New York Film Critics' Circle Awards”.
He has been included on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Relationships
Laughton began seeing his co-stage mate Elsa Lanchester, in 1927. After two years of romance, the couple got married. Their marital relationship, which ended when Laughton died, did not bring forth any child.
Death
The English-born entertainer died from kidney cancer in December 1962.
Facts
His first stage work was in “The Government Inspector”, a play written by Nikolai Gogol.
He guest starred on “The Ford Show” in 1961.
During 1952’s presidential elections in America, Laughton threw his support to democratic candidate Adlai Stevenson.
He worked extensively with his wife. They worked together on John Farrow’s 1948 film “The Big Clock”. They also acted together in the 1957 film “Witness for the Prosecution”. For the latter work they were both nominated for an Academy Award.
He and film producer Paul Gregory were close friends, who worked together on a few projects.
