About Charles Seeger
American folk music was preserved and promoted thanks to his efforts with various universities and the federal government.
Biography
He was born in Mexico City, raised in Boston, and attended Harvard. He went to Germany to study and conduct with the Cologne Opera. He became a professor of music at the University of California, Berkeley, after realizing he had a hearing impairment.
He became a lecturer at the Institute of Musical Art (now Julliard) after losing his job in 1919 as a result of his opposition to World War I.
He held a number of posts for the federal government between the mid-1930s and the early 1950s, including technical advisor for the Resettlement Administration, deputy director of the Federal Music Project, and head of the music division of the Pan-American Union.
He promoted fieldwork, writings, and recordings in the continent in these capacities. He and compatriots created the Society of Ethnomusicology after WWII.
Later in life, he created the Seeger Melograph, a tool that allowed researchers to compare the variances in singing styles among various ethnic nations.
Family
His two marriages resulted in seven children.
