About Chris Weitz
A phenomenal filmmaker in his own right, Christopher John Weitz is an American film director, screenwriter, and producer best remembered for his works in iconic films such as “American Pie”, ”The Twilight Saga: New Moon”, and “Cinderella”.
Early Beginnings and American Pie
Weitz began his career in filmmaking in 1998 when he co-wrote the animated film, “Antz”. Realizing his skills as a good scriptwriter, he ventured into the directing and production of comedy films including the 1998 version of the television series, “Fantasy Island”.
Working mostly with his brother, Paul Weitz, the two co-directed and produced one of the most iconic films ever made in Hollywood, “American Pie” (1999). The movie was an international and box office success.
Major Adaptation Works
One of the most recognizable film projects by Weitz was getting the opportunity to direct the New Line Cinema’s adaptation film, “The Golden Compass”, in 2007. It was an adaptation from the book series titled, “His Dark Materials” by English author Sir Philip Pullman. The film, which starred Nicole Kidman, Sam Elliott, Ian McKellen, and Daniel Craig, grossed more than $350 million at the box office. For a budget of $180 million, the film was considered by some as a disappointment.
Another major project of Weitz was his adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s novel “New Moon” into the sequel film, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon”. Even though critics gave the film a slightly negative review, it still performed well at the Box Office, grossing over half a billion dollars. Weitz worked alongside stellar cast members, including Kristen Stewart, Ashley Greene, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, and Dakota Fanning.
Personal Life
After meeting Mercedes Martinez at the Burning Man Festival, the two dated for a while and later got married in 2006. The couple has three children together: a son, Sebastian, and a daughter they named Athena. There isn’t any information about the third child.
Achievements
The 2002 romantic comedy-drama film “About a Boy” is generally regarded as one of Weitz’s most famous works. He and his brother Paul Weitz serve as directors and screenwriters of the film. The film received an Academy Award nomination for “Best Adapted Screenplay”. Its cast members included Rachel Weisz, Nicholas Hoult, Toni Collette, and Hugh Grant.
