About Claes Oldenburg
Claes Oldenburg was a renowned Swedish American “Pop-art” sculptor. He was famously known for his unique and giant “soft sculptures” of versions of everyday objects.
Background & Education
He was of Swedish descent and was born in Stockholm, Sweden. However, due to his father’s job as a Swedish diplomat in America, he lived in Chicago, USA, for most of his life.
He read art history and literature at Yale University and graduated in 1950. He then took courses at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Early Career
While developing his artistic craft, he worked with the “City News Bureau of Chicago” as a reporter. In 1953, he opened his studio and worked on freelance illustrating projects for magazines. He also gained his USA citizenship in the same year. In 1956, he relocated to New York.
Major Works & Honors
In 1962, he began the creation of “happenings” – a series of experimental presentations that involved objects, people, sound, and movement. Between 1960 and 1980, he exhibited numerous famous artworks, such as “The Store,” “Giant Soft Fan,” “Giant Toothpaste Tube,” “Clothespin,” and “Spoonbridge and Cherry.” In addition, several of his sculptures can be found in many European Museums and educational and religious buildings.
In 1989, he was honored with a “Wolf Prize in Arts.” He also received the “National Medal of Arts” in 2000.
Cause of Death
The Swedish Sculptor died from the injuries he sustained after a fall. Oldenburg’s unfortunate demise happened at his home. He lived in Manhattan.
