About Clarice Lispector
Clarice Lispector was one of the most prominent Brazilian women authors of the 20th century. She was known for her novels, short story collections, children’s literature, and other short writings.
Family and Education
Lispector was the last daughter of her parents Pinkh as Lispector and Mania Krimgold Lispector.
Her marriage to Maury Gurgel Valente, her law school mate, happened in 1843. By Valente, she had two children. The marriage, however, ended in 1959.
Journalism and Writing Career
She enrolled in the Law School of the University of Brazil in 1937. She served as a journalist at the Agência Nacional and the newspaper A Noite while at the university.
During the 1940’s she wrote several publications and articles. She published her first novel at the age of 24. The novel was “Perto do coração selvage” (Near to the Wild Heart). The book won the Graça Aranha Prize the following year for the best first novel of 1943. Poet and book critic Lêdo Ivo showered praises on the novel.
During this period, the author also published her first story “Triunfo” in the Pan magazine.
Other popular novels of hers include “A Cidade Sitiada” (The Besieged City), “O Lustre” (The Chandelier), and “Agua viva” (The Stream of Life).
She also wrote a collection of short stories including “Laços de família” (Family Ties), “Onde estivestes de noite” (Where You Were at Night), and “Felicidade clandestine”(Covert Joy).
Awards
The Brazilian author won “Best Translated Book Award” for her novel “A Breath of Life” in 2013:
She also won the PEN Translation Prize for “The Complete Stories” in 2016.
Trivia
In honor of her 98th birthday, a Google Doodle was created in 2018.
Death
She died on December 9, 1977, aged 56. The cause of death was ovarian cancer.
