About Cool Papa Bell
James Thomas "Cool Papa" Bell was an American center fielder, switch hitter, and contact hitter best known for his excellent bat control, bunting ability, and speed. The sportsman is sometimes hailed as the fastest base runner in history. In 1974, he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. The honor was for his accomplishments in the Negro and Latin American Leagues.
Early Years
Papa Bell was raised in Mississippi and worked as a teen at the creamery and agricultural experiment station of Mississippi Agricultural & Mechanical College; now Mississippi State University.
Career
He joined the St. Louis Stars of the Negro National League (NNL)as a pitcher in 1922 when he was 19 years old. During his first Negro league season, he picked up the moniker "Cool." He played for the Pittsburgh Crawfords from 1933 to 1937, the Chicago American Giants from 1942 to 1943, and the Homestead Grays from 1943 - 1945. From 1948 - 1950, he served as the Kansas City Monarchs' player-manager.
He spent four years as a scout for the St. Louis Browns after his playing and coaching career was done.
Personal Life
He wed Clara Bell.
Honors
In 1974, he was admitted to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
