About Cristian Rodríguez
The Uruguayan left winger made it to the 2014 World Cup and won Copa America 2011 with his country.
Club Career
Rodriguez went professional in the 2003-2005 Primera seasons playing for the Uruguayan side C.A. Penarol to lift the 2003 cup. In 2005, he moved to League 1 to play for France’s PSG, where he made almost 40 appearances for the club. Owing to a lack of playing time, the Uruguayan footballer was loaned to Benfica in Portugal for the 2007/08 season. In 2008, he secured a permanent move to FC Porto in Portugal, where he played from until 2012.
He joined Spanish side Atletico Madrid in 2012. Once again, he found himself having been sent out on loan to clubs Parma and Gremio. Before securing a contract with Plaza Colonia in 2021, the winger played for Independiente and Penarol.
International Career
Aside from friendlies, Christian appeared in the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cup qualifier matches and in Copa America for 2007 and 2015 seasons. He was capped 110 times for Uruguay’s senior national team.
Assault
Jean was fined €45,000 for assaulting two stewards during an away match in 2009 and also banned for four matches for assaulting Argentine footballer Gabriel Heinze during a FIFA World Cup qualifier.
Trivia
Cristian Rodríguez was nicknamed “Cebolla” (onion) because he could make players cry and look forlorn with his quick and dazzling dribbles.
