Désirée Clary Rank
About Désirée Clary
Mother to King Oscar I and a former fiancée of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, Bernardine Eugénie Désirée Clary was the wife of Charles XIV John of Sweden and one of the most memorable queens of Sweden and Norway.
Her Family
Born in France, Clary was the daughter of François Clary and Françoise Rose Somis. Her father was a wealthy silk merchant and manufacturer.
She had two other siblings; a sister named Julie Clary, who would later become the Queen of Naples and Spain, and her brother, Nicholas Joseph Clary, who was later known as Count Clary.
Meeting Napoleon Bonaparte
After an unfortunate arrest of her brother, Clary met Joseph Bonaparte, older brother to Napoleon Bonaparte, at the holding cell and there invited him for dinner. Soon after, Joseph got engaged to Julie Clary, the older sister of Désirée. Through this acquaintance, Clary met Napoleon and the two were engaged and married in 1795. However, this engagement was cancelled by Napoleon after he met Joséphine de Beauharnais. The two got married in 1796, leaving Clary disappointed and disgraced.
In 1797, she got engaged to a French General named Mathurin-Léonard Duphot, an arrangement presumed to be the idea of Napoleon Bonaparte as a means of compensation and apology to Clary. Unfortunately, Duphot tragically died on the eve of their marriage.
