About Dick Powell
Versatile American actor, Dick Powell entered into the entertainment scene in the 1930s as a singer. During that period, he worked with the Charlie Davis Orchestra and helped them to record many projects.
In 1932, he appeared in his first film when he played a bandleader role in “Blessed Event”. He’s widely known as the first on-screen actor to portray the detective Philip Marlowe character.
As a director
Aside from gaining fame in front of the cameras, Powell also received lots of praise for his behind-the-scenes works. He made his directorial debut with the 1953 thriller titled “Split Second”. He would go on to work on other movies like “The Conqueror” and “The Enemy Below”.
Family
He was one of the children of Sally Rowena and Ewing Powell. His brothers were called Howard and Luther. In 1945, he married his third wife June Allyson with whom he had two children named Richard Powell, Jr and Pamela.
Due to his marriage with movie star Joan Blondell, he adopted her son who would be known in the movie industry as Norman Powell.
Education
Before pursuing a career in the entertainment industry, he studied at Little Rock College.
Trivia
His work as an MC at the Stanley Theater shot him to stardom.
