About Dwayne De Rosario
The 2019 Ontario Hall of Famer Dwayne Anthony De Rosario is a Canadian-born professional soccer player who plays as a forward or attacking midfielder. He hit fame status in 2000 when he became a 4-time MLS cup winner and represented the Canadian team from 1998 to 2015.
Early Life and Education
As the son of Guyanese immigrants to Canada, Rosario didn't have a relatively easy life growing up. However, he fell in love with the game of soccer and joined the Scarborough Blizzard SC at age 3.
Professional Career and Highlights
The former soccer striker began his professional career at 18 in 1997 when he made his debut playing for Toronto Lynx of the A-League. He later signed with the German club FSV Zwickau and played with them from 1997 to 1999. He then moved back to North America and signed for Richmond Kickers, where he played for one season.
In 2005, he signed for the California-based soccer club, the San Jose Earthquakes. From 2001 to 2005, the Canadian forward made 108 appearances and scored 27 goals. He helped them win the MLS cup.
From 2009 to 2011, Rosario was on the books of Toronto FC, where he made 57 appearances.
Other clubs that Rosario played for include the New York Red Bulls, D.C. United, and Mississauga MetroStars. The latter was where he hung up his boots in 2019.
On the international scene, he played 81 times for the Canadian national team. His first cap came in 1998. He was part of the Canadian side that won the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup which took place in the United States. The last time he donned the Canadian jersey came in a 1-1 draw with Iceland in January 2015. In all, he scored 22 times for Canada.
Achievements and Honors
Rosario is a 4-time MLS Club champion who also won the 2011 MLS Most Valuable Player. Here are some of his other notable achievements and honors:
- With Toronto FC, he won the Canadian Championship twice – 2009 and 2010.
- Dwayne De Rosario was named Canadian Players of the Year four times – 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2011.
- In the 2011 MLS season, while on the books of D.C. United, he was the joint top scorer, having scored 16 goals. He shared the honor with Chris Wondolowski, who was then playing for San Jose Earthquakes.
- Also in 2011, he Dwayne De Rosario received the MLS MVP Award.
- He was part of the MLS Best XI on six occasions.
- In 2019, Rosario was inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame.
