Family
He was the son of Luisa De Filippo and Eduardo Scarpetta. He first married Dorothy Pennington and later Thea Prandi and divorced in 1959. His last marriage was to actress Isabella Quarantotti.
Acting Career
Filipo created the theatre production company compagnia del Teatro Umoristico I De Filippo with his siblings, Peppino and Titina.
In 1954, he appeared in the film “L’oro di Napoli (The Gold of Naples)” directed by Vittorio De Sica. In the film, he appeared alongside Sophia Loren and Silvana Mangano.
Filippo also played the role of Vittorio in “Three Girls from Rome”, a 1951 Italian classic comedy film directed by Luciano Emmer.
The actor also wrote several theatre pieces such as ”Requie a l'anema soja/I morti non fanno paura’’ (May his soul rest, 1926), “Ogni anno punto e da capo” (Every Year Back from the Start, 1931) and “Bene mio e core mio “ (My Heart, my Treasure, 1955).
Honors
The President of the Italian Republic Sandro Pertini honored him with the title Senatore a Vita.
Death
He died after suffering kidney failure on October 31, 1984 at the age of 84.
