About Emerson Fittipaldi
In 1972, Brazilian racing driver Emerson Fittipaldi became the youngest person to win the Formula 1 world championship. Then as a member of Team Lotus, Fittipaldi repeated this achievement two years later. He’s the co-founder of the now-defunct Fittipaldi Automotive. Before leaving F1, he raced for the McLaren team.
In 1984, he made his American CART debut and won the series five years later. He also won two Indianapolis 500 competitions before ending his driving career at age 50.
Family
His father Wilson Fittipaldi Sr was a celebrated Brazilian radio commentator and journalist. His mother is called Józefa Wojciechowska and has a brother named Wilson Fittipaldi. He divorced Maria Helena before marrying Joana.
Honors
In 2001, he was elected into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. He became a member of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame three years later.
Trivia
He was involved in a plane crash in 1997 which left him with serious injuries.
This famous driver was christened after Ralph Waldo Emerson, a popular philosopher and author.
