About Emmett Ashford
Emmett Ashford was the first African American umpire in the American League. Despite facing racial prejudice throughout his 20-year career, he rose to become one of the courageous members of the Black community who successfully integrated into mainstream baseball.
Early Life
Ashford was born in Los Angeles, where he attended Jefferson High School. As a student, he participated in several activities.
Ashford attempted a baseball career but was one day asked to stand in for an absent umpire. However, it wasn’t until his time in the Navy that he was inspired to become an umpire.
Career
His career took off in the Arizona-Texas League before moving on to the Western International and Pacific Coast Leagues (PCL). After twelve years in the PCL, he joined the American League, where he grew immensely popular due to his flashy outfits and his on-field antics. He retired in 1969.
Later Years
Following his career, Ashford appeared in films and TV shows, such as “The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings” and “The Jacksons.”
He passed away in 1980; and in 2008, he was inducted into the Baseball Reliquary’s Shrine of the Eternals.
