About Eric Shinseki
Growing up in an American family of Japanese ancestry from which some members had served in the prestigious 442nd Infantry Regiment of the US Army, Eric Shinseki had more than enough motivation to join the army. Active in the army from 1965 to 2003, he served in the Vietnam War on two different tours of duty as well as the Bosnian War. He became the 34th Chief of Staff of the United States in June 1999, serving until his retirement.
He served as the United States Secretary of Veteran Affairs from 2009 to 2014, making him the first Asian-American to occupy the office.
Education and Personal Life
He was raised in Lihue, Kaua’i, Hawaii. He earned a BSc degree from the United States Military Academy and an MA in English degree from Duke University. He has two children with his wife, Patricia.
Achievements
His military decorations include Distinguished Service Medals from the State Department, US Army, US Navy, US Air Force and US Coast Guard.
Trivia
He is recognized as the first four-star general of Asian-American ethnicity.
