About Ernesto Zedillo
American economist and politician Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de León is known for being the 61st President of Mexico. His tenure in office lasted from 1994 to 2000. His visionary ruling helped Mexico out of one of the worst economic crises in the country's history.
Early Life and Education
Zedillo was born to Rodolfo Zedillo Castillo and Martha Alicia Ponce de Leon. He enrolled in the National Polytechnic Institute and graduated as an economist in 1972. He later pursued his master's and Ph.D. studies at Yale University in 1974.
Career Highlights
The economist branched into politics and joined the Institutional Revolutionary Party, where he fully supported the party's policies for the country's economic development. He was named the deputy secretary of planning and budget control in 1987, headed the department in 1988 and later rose to the role of Secretary of Education in 1992.
Zedillo ran for the president's office and won. He took his oath of office on December 1, 1994 and began his six-year term.
At the 2000 Mexican general election, Zedillo was defeated by right-wing candidate Vicente Fox.

The economist married Nilda Patricia Velasco in 1974 and had 5 children with her.
