About Gene Fullmer
The former Kennecott Copper Mine worker and Korean War veteran entered the boxing ring to set records for sixty-four middleweight bouts. His career stats read as: 55 victories, six defeats and three draws. Under the mentorship of Marv Jenson, Fullmer made a bit of boxing history by fighting top opponents as Florentino Fernandez and Benny Paret.
Family
In 1955, Fullmer tied the knot with Dolores Holt, with whom he had four children. His younger brothers, Don and Jay were middleweight and lightweight boxers, respectively.
Professional Career
Gene Fullmer won a unanimous decision fight against Sugar Ray Robinson in round fifteen to grab the World Middleweight title in January 2, 1957, but he lost the rematch in May the same year by knockout in round five.
Two years later, on August 28, he reclaimed the title by technically knocking out Carmen Basilio in the 14th round.
Paul Pender, who had earlier claimed the title from Sugar Ray, retired before Fullmer could engage him.
In October 23, 1962, Dick Tiger retrieved the middleweight title from Fullmer, and after the rematch in 1963 ended in a draw, Tiger brought Fulmer down by a seventh round technical knockout on August 10 to retain his title.
Memorial
Among others, Gene Fullmer was portrayed as bartender in the 1968 film “The Devils Brigade” and on the album arts of Alice in Chains’ “Greatest Hits”.
