Early Life and Education
Fitzgerald was born to Edward and Edith Fitzgerald, who were devout Catholics. Fitzgerald enrolled in the Dublin School of Art, hoping to become a successful actress.
Career
Fitzgerald started her career in 1932, performing at the Dublin's Gate Theatre before leaving for the Broadway stage in 1938.
The actor rose to fame in 1939 for her role in "Dark Victory", which won her an Academy Award nomination. She later appeared in "Watch on the Rhine" in 1943 and "Wilson" in 1944. She also appeared in several television series in 1965, such as "The Golden Girls" and "Our Private World".
Personal Life and Death
Fitzgerald was married to Edward William Lindsay-Hogg from 1936 to 1946. Her second marriage, to Stuart Scheftel, lasted from 1946 to 1994. She died in 2005 of Alzheimer's disease, aged 91. She was survived by 2 children.
Awards
Fitzgerald won a Daytime Emmy Award. She was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.
