About Hans Adolf Krebs
Hans Adolf Krebs has been credited for discovering the urea and citric acid cycles which are mainly found in the human cell. The German-British scientist contributed immensely to studies like cellular respiration which shows how living cells draw energy from oxygen and food.
He started his research in 1926 when he joined the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Biology as one of their research assistants. Krebs was later hired by Altona’s Municipal Hospital where he worked at the Department of Medicine.
The renowned biologist made the headlines in the early 1930s when he published the discovery of the formation of urea. As a lecturer, he taught at institutions like the University of Sheffield, the University of Oxford, and the University of Cambridge.
Family
He was the son of Alma Davidson and her surgeon husband Georg Krebs. He was married to Margaret Cicely Fieldhouse and had four children including English zoologist John Richard Krebs.
Education
In 1918, Krebs joined the University of Göttingen after graduating from the Gymnasium Andreanum. The following year, he moved to the University of Freiburg.
Achievements
He was honored with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1953. That same year, he received the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research. He has also been celebrated with prizes like the Copley Medal, and the Royal Medal.
Trivia
He worked under German medical doctor Otto Heinrich Warburg.
He fled to England in 1933 to avoid clashing with the Nazi Party.
