About Hans Kelsen
In 1920, Hans Kelsen wrote the Austrian Constitution which, to some extent, has been used for more than a Century. A jurist and philosopher, Kelsen contributed to fields like international relations, philosophy, sociology, and legal science.
He was best known for his 1934 book dubbed “Pure Theory of Law” and its revised edition which was released in 1960. While living in the United States, he worked with the University of California, Berkeley.
Family
His parents were Auguste Löwy and Adolf Kelsen. He had three other siblings. In 1912, he got married to Margarete Bondi, and together they raised two daughters.
Education
After completing Akademisches Gymnasium, he moved to the University of Vienna where he read law.
Notable Achievements
The American Society of International Law made Kelsen one of its Honorary Members in 1938. He was also decorated with laurels like the Grand Merit Cross with Star of the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Great Silver Medal with Star for Services to the Republic of Austria.
