This economist and scholar is known in the United States for his landmark contributions and being the first president of the National Labor Relations Board.
Background
Millis was born in Indiana and attended Paoli High School, where he participated in a number of sports activities. He went ahead to Indiana University and earned his first degree and Masters. Millis received his doctorate degree in 1899 from the University of Chicago.
Career
Millis served in different capacities, including being a professor of economics at the University of Chicago. He served as the field investigator for the United States Immigration Commission from 1908 to 1910. He also served as chairman of the Trade Board of the Chicago Men's Clothing Industry from 1919 to 1921. Millis became the President of the National Labor Relations Board in 1934. He ensured the agency was free from government interference. However, a year later, he resigned in 1935 to return to lecturing young minds.
Personal life and Death
He tied the knot with Alice, with whom he fathered a son and two daughters. The American economist passed away on June 25, 1948 after suffering a bad stroke.
