About Heinrich Schliemann
Heinrich Schliemann was a German business executive and one of the earliest leading archaeologists. Some of his excavations, somehow, lent credence to the historical events and places talked about in the works of Greek poet Homer, especially the “Iliad”.
He was also one of the earliest explorers of the Bronze Age’s Aegean civilization studies. Before going into archaeology, he had made a fortune in the importation business, gold trading and banking.
Family Life
He was the son of Lutheran minister Ernst Schliemann and his wife, Luise Therese Sophie Schliemann. He was first married to Ekaterina Lyshin, with whom he had three children, from 1852 to 1869. He also had two kids with Sophia Engastromenou, his second wife.
Controversy
He received criticism for his use of dynamite in excavating Hisarlik. It is believed that the ancient city, which may have been the site of Troy, was destroyed due to his excavation method.
Death
He died on 26 December 1890 from cholesteatoma.
