About Homer Hickam
Homer Hickam made a name for himself as an author following his service to the United States Army, the United States Army Aviation and Missile Command (USAAMC) and NASA. The trained industrial engineer, who had previously been a member of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, served in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1970 during which he saw combat in the Vietnam War. During his time as an aerospace engineer with NASA (1981-1998), he trained astronauts in extravehicular activities (EVA). His best-known works include “Rocket Boys: A Memoir”, “Back to the Moon '' and “Sky of Stone ''.
Family Life
He was brought up in Coalwood, West Virginia as Elsie Gardener Lavender and Homer Sr.’s second son. He was married to Paula Morgan, whom he divorced in 1986. He has since been married to Linda Terry.
Achievements
He received the US Armed Forces’ Bronze Star Medal and the Commendation Medal.
