About Iannis Xenakis
Iannis Xenakis’ ability to apply mathematical models in his works made him one of the celebrated composers during the 1950s and 60s. He was also credited for developing computer and electronic music. Throughout his career which lasted for five decades, the Greek-French musician produced many compositions including 1953’s “Metastaseis”, and “Psappha” which was composed in 1975.
Other works
Aside from his successes in the world of music, Xenakis was also a popular architect. He was best known for his collaborative work with Le Corbusier. Together, they worked on many structures including the Philips Pavilion and the Unité d'Habitation of Nantes-Rezé.
He was also an author and published books such as “Formalized Music: Thought and Mathematics in Composition” which was launched in 2001.
Family
He spent his early years with his parents Fotini Pavlou and Klearchos Xenakis alongside a brother named Jason. He was the husband of Françoise Gargouïl, a French novelist. They had a daughter called Mâkhi.
Education
He was trained at the National Technical University of Athens.
Trivia
Xenakis was influenced by Johannes Brahms and Ludwig van Beethoven.
After fleeing to France from Greece, he was given a life sentence which was later reduced to ten years in 1951.
