About James A. Porter
James Amos Porter was an influential figure when it came to African-American art history. The Baltimore, Maryland-born scholar produced many critically acclaimed works in the African American Art movement during the 1960s and 1970s.
Early Life
Porter had his elementary school education between 1918 and 1923. He later graduated from Howard University with an art degree. He also went a step further to complete his post-graduate degree at the University in 1926 and later graduated from Columbia University. The art historian graduated from New York University with a master's degree in art history in 1937.
Career
In 1953, he was appointed the Director of the Art Gallery. He stayed in that position until 1970. He also served as the chairman of Howard University’s art department. Porter published his first comprehensive study of African-American art called Modern Negro Art in 1943. The historian went on to study the history of the people of Cuba from 1945 to 1946. The historian also excelled in artworks of modern culture, primarily using charcoal portraits of his family as portraits for his works.
