About Janusz Kaminski
Janusz Kaminski is an award-winning Polish director and cinematographer. He is best known for his work on Steven Spielberg’s holocaust drama “Schindler’s List”, and the movie “Saving Private Ryan”, both of which earned him two Academy Awards for “Best Cinematography”.
Life and Career
In 1981, Kaminski relocated to the United States from Poland and enrolled at the Film and Fine Arts Department of Columbia College. His film career took off in the late 1980s, but he received his break with the TV film “Wildflower”. His photography style caught the attention of Steven Spielberg and he was hired to shoot “Class of ‘61” for the famed American filmmaker.
Awards and Recognition
Kaminski won two Academy awards for his cinematography in the 1990s. He has also been nominated for other projects, such as “Amistad”, “War Horse”, “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly”, “Lincoln”, and “West Side Story”.
In 2010, the Polish cinematographer received the Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal by the AFI Conservatory.
Personal Life
He was married to American actress Holly Hunter from 1995 to 2001. After the pair’s divorce, Kamiński later married Rebecca Rankin, in 2004, with that marriage also ending in 2010.
