Jerzy Kosinski was a famous Polish-American novelist who received the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1970. He started attracting attention in 1965 when he launched his controversial novel entitled “The Painted Bird”.
He went on to publish many best-selling books including “Being There” and “Steps”. He also served as the president of PEN International in the United States.

At birth, he was named Józef Lewinkopf but changed to Jerzy Kosiński during the Second World War. His four years marriage to Mary Hayward Weir ended in 1966. Two years later, he married Katherina von Fraunhofer.
