About Jimmy Doolittle
Jimmy Doolittle joined the U.S. Army in 1918 as an officer of the Signal Officers Reserve Corps. He went on to serve as a flight leader and instructor during the First World War. He made his first major flight in 1922 when he piloted the DH-4 aircraft in the maiden cross-country flight.
He would be remembered for his adventures during WWII. He led an army to raid Japan in what was known as ‘The Doolittle Raid’.
Family
The American soldier was born to Rosa Cerenah Shephard and Frank Henry Doolittle. Josephine Daniels became his wife in 1917.
Education
He graduated from Manual Arts High School before joining Los Angeles City College. He further studied at the University of California’s College of Mines.
Accolades
He received many laurels throughout his service. Some of his decorations were Medal of Honor, Presidential Medal of Freedom, and Distinguished Service Medals.
Trivia
The first time he saw an aircraft was in 1910 during the Los Angeles International Air Meet at Dominguez Field.
