About John C. Frémont
John C. Frémont is credited with being an instrumental figure in opening up the Western United States to the settlement. It was while leading up to five expeditions in the area in the 1840s that he participated in the California genocide, in which Native Americans were murdered. Apart from being an explorer, Fremont was also a military officer and politician. He served as the Military Governor of California (1847), United States Senator from California (1850-1851) and 5th Governor of Arizona Territory (1878-1881).
Family Life
He was born out of wedlock to Anne Beverley Whiting and Charles Frémont, a French-Canadian schoolteacher who had been hired by the former’s husband to teach her. In 1841, he married Jesse Ann Benton, who would become a writer and political activist. They had five children.
Death
He died on July 13, 1890, from peritonitis.
Trivia
He was the first-ever Republican Party candidate to run for U.S. President.
