About John Cheever
John was a story writer and novelist of American origins. One of the names used for him was “The Chekhov of the Suburbs”.
Personal Life
He was the son of Mary Liley Cheever and Frederick Lincoln Cheever. His father was into selling shoes and was well to do. Later, when those sales declined all over, he started losing money and started depending on alcohol for comfort. He started schooling at Thayer Academy. At this time, the family was struggling financially and the gift shop his mother started did not help very much. He later met Mary Winternitz and married her in 1941. His sexuality was however complicated because there were beliefs that he was gay.
Career
His story titled “Buffalo” was first published by The New Yorker, then he started working with the “Federal Writers’ Project”. In 1942, he later decided to join the army. A year after, he published “The Way Some People Live” which was a compilation of short stories he had written. Most people criticized his writings though, but that did not really stop him.
Death
He suffered from a tumor in his right lung in 1981. The cancer however spread and in 1982, he passed on.
