About John Ruskin
John Ruskin was an English writer, art critic and patron – he was also a watercolourist, draughtsman and social thinker of the 19th century.
His writing styles and subjects were diverse, ranging from architecture to botany, geology, literature, political economy and myth.
His writings also came in the form of poems, essays, travel guides, letters and manuals. He is known best for the extended essay, “Modern Painters” and the book on the economy, “Unto This Last”.
Family Life
He was the son of Margaret Cock and John James Ruskin. He was married to Scottish painter Effie Gray from 1848 to 1854, when it was annulled. They did not consummate their marriage in all the years they were together.
Death
He died from influenza on 20 January 1900 aged 80.
Trivia
He is the founder of the charitable Educational Trust, Guild of St. George.
