About John T Scopes
John Thomas Scopes was a teacher, football coach, and husband to Mildred E. Walker. The father of two became famous after he was put on trial for violating the Tennessee Butler Act in 1925.
Early Life and Education
Scopes was the fifth child and only son of Thomas Scopes and Mary Alva Brown. He went to Salem High School and graduated in 1919. He dropped out of the University of Illinois for health reasons and later graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1924 with a law major and a geology minor.
Trial of Scopes – the Scopes Monkey Trial
Scopes trial, also known as the Scopes Monkey Trial because of its nature, happened in 1925. The prosecution of the science teacher was for teaching evolution in a Tennessee Public School which was illegal then. The trial was also used to challenge the bill's constitutionality and advocate that Darwin's Theory of evolution was legitimate.
The case ended in 1925, and Scopes was fined $100, roughly $1,500 in 2021. The ruling was later overturned on the grounds of a legal technicality. Regardless, the trial affected his career and destroyed his opportunities, and he finally settled in the oil industry, where he stayed until his death in 1970.
Personal Life
John T. Scopes married wife Mildred Elizabeth Scopes in 1905. He was survived by his wife and two sons, John Thomas and William Clement Scopes.
