About Johnny Bower
He was popularly called “The China Wall”, a name he earned as a result of his marvelous performances in the field of hockey. Bower won his first Vezina Trophy after doing brilliantly well in the 1960/1961 season.
Personal life
He was the son of Johnny Kiszkan and Lizzie Jacobson. According to him, his surname “Bower” was his mother’s maiden name.
He was married to Nancy Brame and he fathered three children.
Hockey Career
He developed interest in hockey at an early age and also taught himself how to play hockey. He began his career with the New York Rangers in 1953 and participated in the National Hockey League (NHL). He appeared in 70 games and out of the 70, he scored 29 goals. During his stay with the New Rangers, he earned the “rookie of the year” honor.
In 1958, he was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs. With the team, he went on to win the Stanley Cup four times. He retired from hockey in 1970.
After retiring, he served as a coach and scout for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Awards and Honors
Bower won the “Hap Holmes Memorial Award for three consecutive times – in 1952, 1957 and 1958.
In addition to winning the Stanley Cup four times, he won the Les Cunningham Award three times.
He was a three-time Calder Cup winner.
Both the Cleveland Monsters and the Toronto Maple Leafs retired his number 1 jersey.
He was inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1976.
Death
He died of pneumonia.
