About Joseph E. Johnston
Joseph E. Johnston became a full member of the U.S. Army in 1829 and was selected to the second lieutenant position. His bravery and heroics during the Seminole Wars, and the Mexican–American War made him one of the trusted military officers in the United States.
By the end of 1860, he had been promoted to the Quartermaster General rank. However, Johnston joined the Confederate States Army the following year following the secession of Virginia. In 1863, he commanded the Department of the West, and became the leader of the Army of Tennessee the following year.
Other Works
Aside from his military work, Johnston was also a politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he was elected into the U.S House of Representatives in 1879 and served until 1881. He was also into other businesses, especially in the finance and railway sectors.
Family
He was the son of renowned attorney Peter Johnston Jr. and his partner Mary Valentine Wood. Charles Clement Johnston, his brother, was a famous politician.
Education
He had his training at the United States Military Academy.
Trivia
A U.S Navy ship was named after him during the Second World War.
In 2010, a statue of him was constructed at the place where the Battle of Bentonville took place.
