About Juan Belmonte
Spanish bullfighter Juan Belmonte possessed jaw dropping bullfighting skills which made him one of the greatest toreros in history.
Career
During the early stages of career, which was from 1910-1935, Juan’s style of fighting was standing erect, almost motionless and at a closer proximity to the bull’s horn than his predecessors. The iconic bullfighter’s technique of not getting hurt was by redirecting the bull’s charge with skillful cape work to avoid the horns from barely touching him, instead of using the footwork technique. He established a great friendship of eight years with the great Joselito (José Gómez Ortega) until he was gored in 1920.
Final Years and Death
Throughout his bullfighting career he acquired 24 serious wounds. After his retirement, he developed a heart condition and a week before he died he was diagnosed with lung cancer and shot himself shortly.
Honors
He set a Spanish bullfighting record for a single season by appearing in 109 corridas.
