About Kurt Waldheim
Kurt Waldheim served in Nazi Germany’s Wehrmacht military group before joining the Austrian diplomatic service at the age of 27 years.
Career
Between 1951 and 1956, he worked with Austria’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs. After leaving the ministry, the Austrian politician was made head of the country’s mission in Canada. In 1964, he represented the country at the United Nations. He contested in the 1971 presidential election, but was unsuccessful. Later that year, he competed for the Secretary-General position of the UN and was sworn into office the following year.
He served in that position for nine years before winning the elections to become Austria’s President in 1986.
Family
His parents were Josefine Petrasch and Walter Watzlawik. In 1944, he married Elisabeth Ritschel and together they had three children named Gerhard, Lieselotte and Christa.
Education
He studied at the Vienna Consular Academy and also at the University of Vienna.
Decorations
His days in the military earned him the Medal of the Crown of King Zvonimir and Iron Cross 2nd Class.
Trivia
He spent most of his political years with the People's Party.
During his time at Wehrmacht, he worked as one of their intelligence officers.
