About Ladislao Kubala
Football legend Ladislao Kubala graced a number of popular stadia throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Indescribable hardships, heroic deeds, and beautiful victories infused his life with color. The Hungarian forward played for a variety of teams, including Ferencváros, Slovan Bratislava, Barcelona, and Espanyol.
Career
As a young player, he played for Ganz TE, a team that competed in Hungary’s third tier. He temporarily represented Pro Patria in Italy, escaping military service. He consented to represent Torino in a testimonial matchup against S.L. Benfica in May 1949 but backed out. The plane transporting the Torino team crashed into the Superga hills on the way back from Lisbon, killing all 31 people on board.
On June 15, 1950, he committed to Spanish giants FC Barcelona, and per the agreement, Dauk was named Barcelona's head coach. He scored 26 goals in 19 games during his La Liga debut season. After developing tuberculosis, he lost a significant portion of the 1952–1953 season, potentially ending his playing career.
He represented three different national teams: Spain, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia.
Personal Life
He wed Anna Viola Daukova, the Czechoslovak national team coach’s sister, in 1947.
