About Laurent Fignon
French cyclist Laurent Fignon began his professional career in 1982 but shot to fame the following year when he was crowned the winner of the Tour de France. He repeated this achievement in 1984, which established him as one of the greatest cyclists to partake in the sport.
That same year, he won the Giro d'Italia’s Mountains classification. His most successful year was in 1989 when he won the Giro d'Italia. Later that year, he appeared at the summit of the FICP rankings. During his career, he raced for a number of teams including Système U, and Gatorade–Chateau d'Ax. Some popular competitions that he participated in were Vuelta a España, and the National Road Race Championships.
Controversies
After the 1987 Grand Prix de Wallonie, the cyclist tested positive for some banned substances believed to be amphetamines. This led to his disqualification from the competition. He also tested positive for the same substance two years later.
Education
He read Structural and Materials Science at the University of Villetaneuse.
Trivia
In 2009, he published his autobiography titled "We were young and carefree (Nous étions jeunes et insouciants)".
