About Lawrence B. Slobodkin
The science behind the relationships between living organisms, including humans, and their physical environment was a discipline that was pioneered by Lawrence Basil Slobodkin. The popular ecologist was well revered for his innovative thinking and visionary leadership in his field of study.
Early Life
Slobodkin developed a love for biological sciences and pursued the discipline at Bethany College before going on to continue his studies at Yale University. The scientist received his doctorate in 1951.
Career
The scientist built on the foundations left behind by the Italian mathematician and physicist, Vito Volterra and the Russian biologist and evolutionist, Georgy Frantsevich Gause. Slobodkin's time working at the University of Michigan saw him pioneer the use of calorimetry as a tool to help study the efficiency of energy flow in ecosystems. He also went on to explore problems relating to the role food and predation play in limiting population growth.
Notable Works
Slobodkin also published science literature, including "Growth and Regulation of Animal Populations" in 1980, "Beyond Ecological Awareness" in 1998, and " A Citizen's Guide to Ecology" in 2003.
