About Leonard Peltier
Leonard Peltier is a Native American activist and a member of the American Indian Movement, a grassroots movement formed in 1968 to tackle poverty, discrimination and police brutality issues against Native Americans.
He came into the spotlight in the mid-1970s after he was indicted for the murder of two FBI agents on June 26, 1975. In 1977, he was given two life sentences after he was found guilty in a trial that has been described as controversial. He has been in prison since then, despite various clemency campaigns by prominent political and religious figures worldwide.
Family Life
He was raised in the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation of North Dakota. He has Dakota, Lakota and French ancestry.
Trivia
In 1999, he released a memoir titled “Prison Writings: My Life Is My Sun Dance”.
