She was a student of the commercial school and learnt acting at the Bern University of Arts.
Career
Between the mid-1950s and 1960s, she was one of the most popular actresses in German-language cinema. She appeared in films that garnered good reviews and success, including “Das Spukschloß im Spessart”, “The Last Summer “, “I often think of Piroschka”, “Die Zürcher Verlobung.
She gained international acclaim after she played the main role in the 1958 war drama film “Time to Live and Time to Die”, which was originally a novel written by Erich Maria Remarque. The film was directed by Douglas Sirk. She co-starred with American actor, John Gavin.
The actress also appeared in Billy Wonder’s comedy “One, Two, Three”, from 1961.
Nominations
In 1964, she received a nomination for a Golden Globe for “Best Supporting Actress” for playing Sonya in “State Affair”.
