About Manuel Belgrano
Regarded as one of the Founding Fathers of Argentina, Manuel Belgrano partook in his native country’s war for independence and created its flag.
Background
Belgrano was born in Buenos Aires. While attending university in Spain, he grew interested in the ideologies of the Age of Enlightenment. Upon his return home, he became a strong proponent of education and political reform. Although his ideas were rejected, Belgrano remained undeterred and continued to work toward his country’s liberty.
He gained his first military experience when the British invaded Argentina in 1806. When Argentina split with Spain, Belgrano called for the adoption of the Argentinian flag.
Belgrano was in support of making his country a monarchy and unsuccessfully travelled to Spain to find a ruler.
