About Margaret Mead
Margaret Mead’s widespread popularity in the 1960s and 1970s could be attributed partly to her frequent writings and speeches in the mass media.
As an anthropologist, her research focused on culture, personality and child-rearing problems.
Her most popular works, “Coming of Age in Samoa” and “Sex and Temperament in Three Primitive Societies” have been credited with influencing the sexual revolutions of the 1960s.
Family Life
She was the eldest of five children born to sociologist Emily and finance professor Edward Sherwood Mead. She dated anthropologist-linguist Edward Sapir.
She had a daughter, Mary Catherine Bateson, with her third husband, Gregory Bateson (1936-1950). Her first two husbands were archaeologist Luther Cressman (1923-1926) and anthropologist Reo Fortune (1928-1935).
Achievements
She became an inductee of the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1976. She was posthumously honored with a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1979.
Death
She died on 15 November 1978 from pancreatic cancer.
