About Mason Rudolph
Mason Rudolph, born Edgar Mason Rudolph, was a prolific 20th-century American professional golfer. He achieved many successes at the amateur and professional levels and won five titles on the “PGA Tour.”
Background & Amateur Career
In 1950 at age 16, he made his mark as a promising golfer by winning the “US Junior Amateur” championship. Six years later, he was the champion of the Western Amateur championship. In addition, he won the 1956 “Tennessee State Open” as an amateur golfer. He was also part of the 1957 “Walker Cup” team.
Professional Career Highlights
He became a professional golfer in 1958. The next year, he joined the “PGA Tour,” winning the “Rookie of the Year” award for the competition.
Rudolph won five official events at the PGA Tour in his career. In addition, he won five Tennessee State Open titles (1972, 1966, 1963, 1964, & 1959). He also represented the USA during the 1971 “Ryder Cup.”
After retiring, he served as the head coach of Vanderbilt University’s golf team for five years.
Honors & Legacy
He was added to the “Tennessee Golf Hall of Fame” in 1990. The “Mason Rudolph Golf Course” in Clarksville, Tennessee, is named after him.
Death
The golfer died at age 76, in April of 2011, after suffering several heart attacks.
