About Maurice de Vlaminck
The quintessential ‘Jack of all trades’, Maurice de Vlaminck was a lot of things: a musician, novelist, actor, and cyclist. But he is best known for his painting and largely contributing to the painting style that is known as Fauvism.
Background
Vlaminck was born to a French mother and Flemish father. As a young boy, he learned how to play the piano and violin. It wasn’t until he was in his late teens that he took up painting. When he was 23, he met André Derain and the pair rented a studio together. In the early 1900s, he started writing several pornographic novels which Derain illustrated.
Painting Career
Some of Vlaminck’s best works include “The Bar Counter”, “Village on the River”, and “The Bridge at Chatou.” He adopted the Fauvist style of using short and often choppy brushstrokes. He was also known for using brighter and more expressive colors compared to his counterparts during that era.
Personal Life
Vlaminck married twice in his lifetime, first to Suzanne Berly in 1894 and then to Berthe Combes. He had two daughters from his marriage to Combes.
Accomplishments
Some of Vlaminck’s works can be viewed at the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
He also wrote poetry, and fiction, and illustrated an impressive number of books throughout his career.
